Journalism in the Public Interest — Independent. Accurate. Global.

Section 6

AI Policy

Artificial intelligence may assist journalism. It does not replace editorial responsibility.

GSR recognises that artificial intelligence can assist journalists with research organisation, transcription, translation, data processing, drafting support, visual production and other newsroom tasks.

Responsibility for GSR journalism, however, remains with human editors and journalists.

AI is not an authoritative source

Information produced by an artificial-intelligence system must not be assumed to be factual merely because the system presents it confidently.

Material factual claims produced with AI assistance should be independently checked against reliable sources before publication.

AI must not be used to fabricate quotations, sources, interviews, documents, evidence or events.

AI-generated and AI-assisted images

GSR may use AI-generated or digitally created imagery for illustration, design, promotional material or clearly non-documentary visual presentation.

Synthetic imagery must not be presented in a manner that would materially mislead audiences into believing that it is an authentic photograph of an event that occurred.

Where an AI-generated or materially altered image could reasonably be mistaken for documentary evidence, GSR should clearly identify its illustrative or synthetic nature.

GSR will exercise particular caution when synthetic imagery depicts identifiable public figures, conflicts, disasters, crimes, elections or other sensitive events.

Journalism and editorial review

AI may assist the preparation of journalism, but publication requires appropriate human editorial judgment.

The responsible editor must remain accountable for accuracy, context, fairness and compliance with GSR standards.

Confidentiality

Confidential source material, unpublished sensitive information, protected personal data or other information subject to legitimate confidentiality obligations should not be placed into external AI systems without appropriate safeguards.

Transparency

GSR’s objective is meaningful transparency — not meaningless disclosure of every routine technological tool used during production.

Where AI materially creates or transforms content in a way that could affect an audience’s understanding of its authenticity or origin, GSR should disclose that fact appropriately.
