Background
Bola Tinubu is widely regarded as one of Nigeria's most consequential political strategists. As Governor of Lagos State for two terms, he oversaw a period of significant internally generated revenue growth and infrastructure development that transformed Lagos into Nigeria's economic capital in practice as well as name.
He was a founding figure of the All Progressives Congress and is credited as the principal architect of the coalition that brought Muhammadu Buhari to power in 2015 — a feat described by supporters as the first democratic transfer of power between parties in Nigeria's history.
Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election with 36.6% of the vote in a three-way contest, defeating Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi. His first term has been defined by the removal of the fuel subsidy, currency devaluation, and significant economic turbulence. His 2027 re-election campaign will be fought largely on his economic record.
